Accounting and tax services built for growing businesses
Most business owners don't love tax. Fair enough. But the numbers behind your tax return are the same numbers that tell you whether the business is actually working. We treat accounting and tax as one job: keep you compliant with the ATO, and keep you informed about what the figures mean.
Acquire Strategic Accounting is a Brisbane firm with 20+ years in accounting, tax, advisory and structuring. We run three firms under one roof, which means a deep bench and a lot of pattern recognition. Whatever your business is going through, we've likely seen a version of it before.
The work is practical. Lodgements go in on time. Bookkeeping stays current. Tax planning happens before the financial year ends, not after. And you always know who to call.
What's included in our accounting and tax service
Every business is different, so we scope the work to fit. Some clients want the full package. Others have an in-house bookkeeper and just need the tax side handled well. Either way, here's the menu.
As a Xero Platinum Partner, we build most of our workflows around Xero. If you're on something else, we can talk about whether it's worth moving. Often it is. Sometimes it isn't.
- Business tax returns for sole traders, partnerships, companies and trusts
- BAS and IAS preparation and lodgement, including GST and PAYG withholding
- Bookkeeping on Xero, with reconciliations that actually get done
- Annual financial statements and management reports
- Tax planning reviews before 30 June
- Fringe benefits tax, payroll tax and other obligations as they apply
- ATO correspondence, payment plans and liaison on your behalf
Tax returns, BAS and bookkeeping that talk to each other
When bookkeeping, BAS and the annual tax return are handled by three different people, things fall through the gaps. Transactions get coded one way for GST and another way at year end. Nobody notices until the ATO does.
We keep the whole chain under one roof. The same team that reconciles your bank feed prepares your BAS and your tax return. That means fewer surprises, cleaner records and far less time spent chasing paperwork in July.
It also means your figures are usable during the year. A business owner who can see current profit, GST owing and upcoming PAYG obligations in real time makes very different decisions to one working from last year's return.
Tax planning that happens before the financial year ends
Here's the thing about tax: once 30 June passes, most of your options are gone. Timing of income and expenses, superannuation contributions, asset purchases, distributions from a trust, dividends from a company. These generally need to be decided and actioned before year end to count.
So we schedule tax planning as a standing part of the service, usually from April onwards. We estimate your position, look at the levers available under the ATO's current rules, and give you a plain-English list of what's worth doing and what isn't. No surprises in October.
If your structure is holding you back, that conversation flows straight into our structuring and asset protection work. Same team, same file, no re-explaining your business.
Who our accounting and tax service suits
We work best with businesses that are moving: scaling up, restructuring, adding entities or preparing for a sale. Our clients include construction contractors, franchisees, real estate agencies, allied health practices, transport operators and NDIS providers across Brisbane, Logan and the Scenic Rim.
If you just need a cheap once-a-year return and nothing else, we're probably not the right fit, and we'll say so. If you want an accountant who notices things, asks questions and tells you what they'd do in your shoes, that's us.
In the words of Mark from Mark Pennington Physiotherapy: "ASA have been amazing in simplifying my financial matters which allows me to make informed choices." That's the aim for every client.
How we work with Brisbane businesses
It starts with a strategy call. We look at where the business is, where it's heading and what the current accounting setup is costing you in time, tax and sleep. Then we scope a service that fits and quote it up front.
From there, it's a steady rhythm: bookkeeping kept current, BAS lodged on time, a tax planning review before June, and the year-end return done without drama. You can meet us at Victoria Point or Jimboomba, or by video from anywhere in Australia.
Questions we get asked
What's the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?
A bookkeeper records and reconciles day-to-day transactions, typically in software like Xero. An accountant uses those records to prepare financial statements and tax returns, advise on tax planning and structure, and interpret what the numbers mean. Many businesses need both. At Acquire Strategic Accounting the two sit in the same team, so the bookkeeping is done with the tax return in mind.
How often should a small business see its accountant?
At minimum, once before 30 June for tax planning and once after year end for the return. Businesses that are growing or changing structure generally benefit from quarterly contact, usually tied to BAS lodgement. That cadence keeps the numbers current and catches problems while they're still small and cheap to fix.
Do I need to use Xero to work with you?
No, but most of our clients do, and we're a Xero Platinum Partner. Xero makes bank feeds, reconciliations and reporting much faster, which keeps your fees down and your figures current. If you're on another system, we'll look at what you have and talk through whether a move makes sense for your business.
Can you deal with the ATO on my behalf?
Yes. With your authority we can communicate with the ATO about your lodgements, payment plans and queries. If you've fallen behind, we can usually help you get back on track and set up a sensible arrangement. The earlier you tell us, the more options there generally are, and the less it tends to cost.
What does a business accountant in Brisbane cost?
It depends on the entities involved, the state of your records and how much you want us to do. We scope the work after a strategy call and quote up front, so there are no surprise invoices. A tidy Xero file with current bookkeeping generally costs far less to look after than a shoebox in July.
